Auto Focuser - SharpSky or Lakeside
« on: 20:33:34, 07 September, 2017 »
Hi, I'm back again with yet more questions....

I am looking to buy either the SharpSky or Lakeland focuser, both similar price and appear to be what I need and I'm finding it hard to choose.

Just wondered what people's experience of using these two has been?

Thanks
Jon

I currently use Robofocus, but I also have an a SharpSky unit in the cupboard which I used when I had a twin rig set up.  They both worked as well as each other via Focusmax, but Robofocus had a more straightforward method of mechanically attaching to the scope because I had a custom made braket hence why it is currently on the FSQ.

I have not used lakeside units, so others who have will offer their experience.

Thanks Nimbus, I'm going to go with the Sharpsky.

Dave at SharpSky has been incredibly helpful and has just emailed me an ingenious solution for the mounting bracket which involves printing a made to measure ABS mounting block/collar which goes around the barrel of the focus adjuster. One bolt secures it in place and a metal plate connects it to the motor - a very neat solution.

I had a sharpsky, although very good on lighter set ups I found that the sharpsky unit just didn't have the grunt to lift my kit at zenith      (filterwheel, OAG and a ccd )  ended up getiing the lakeside,    the motor has so much more grunt to it.

Hmmm, I have CCD, OAG, FW and I do most of my imaging at the zenith due to being surrounded by houses.

Just an update for anyone else looking at focusers.

I now have the Sharpsky Pro focuser up and running with SGPro and was getting great autofocus V curves last night.

Dave at Sharpsky came up with an ingenious connection method to attach the motor unit to my Esprit 80, he designed and printed a 3D collar which fits around the focus knob housing (i.e. the cylinder under the focus knob which is removed, and tightens with a small bolt and captive nut, it's an amazingly good fit and very neat.

Very happy and have had fantastic help from Dave getting it set up.
