Tonight went a bit Pete Tong
« on: 20:49:39, 13 March, 2017 »
A list of fails tonight,  I'm sure the gremlins build up when the kit isn't being used   ( Boy am I in for trouble when I come back from India if it does )

1st on the list is regarding plate solving but can be seen here http://ukastroimaging.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=65599.msg534148;topicseen#new

2nd is My Quantum filterwheel.     When I switch on the P.C you can hear the filter wheel turn what is ok,   I then fire up SGP and connect to all equipment.   IF SGP decides to throw a wobbler ( And this is getting quite often now )  I am forced CTRL ALT DEL and stop SGP and restart it,  This is when it will not connect to the F/W even after un plugging the usb connections from the F/W to the 694,  After this I am then forced to switch off the P.C and start again.  Connection is fine after than,  but why will it not see the F/W if I force close SGP and re start it.

3rd Is power drain.   I noticed tonight that if the SX694 is connected to my home built 12v power supply and the cooler is on I get horizontal banding on the image,  If I turn the cooler off ( In SGP ) the banding disappears.     This does not happen when the camera is connected to a 4 way cigarette socket (powered from the same output)   TBH I cannot say I have seen this before,  But it could be that I was using the QSI at that particular time when the home built 12v was introduced into the obs.

Whats the reason for this,      I use a 12v regulated PSU to power up the 4 way and I don't have problems but if the 12v PSU powers up my home made I notice this when the 694 is in use.

See the images I have attached for the cooler on and off

2. the trouble is the Filterwheel is flagged as connected to the windows driver stopping SGP from connecting to it again. The Atik one used to do this but a recent driver change stopped this from happening.

3. I have seen this. It happens when the supply voltage drops below about 11.5 volts. Turning on the cooler puts extra strain on the supply and down the voltage goes. It does sound to me like a wiring issue with your box. Do yo have a multimeter to check continuity and that the supply voltage is low?

Rog,

RE Quantum f/w... I have found that if a controlling prog goes BOOM... then the best (not always only...) way on Windows is a reboot... as Chris  has indicated, there is usually some process hogging the USB connection process/driver... bleddy Windows!

I don't use SGP, but tbh... ANY Windoze proggy which blows up is going to leave drivers unstable ...

You know me with electrics Chris, lol     I don't have a multimeter,  nor do I know how to use one, hahahaha.

Any way I know someone who does. (Lee)   It was a strange one as every port has 13.6v when just connected,    Connecting all 5 up in the home made box the 694 made the voltage drop & the dew buster fluctuated the voltage as well ( pulsing)  What I didn't notice was that I only had 4 out of 5 connected when putting it through the 4 way 12v socket.    The PSU is only 5amps output & we reckon it that when all connected at the same time.     Come to the conclusion to get another PSU and split the power between the two.

A 5 amp PSU is pushing it. I measured my kit (814 with cooler on, dew heater, 12v USB hub and focus controller) and it was drawing about 7 amps peak.

I would get a 20amp one. Good to run things at 50% of rated output though putting the dew heater on a separate one may be advisable.

Time has come to get it now its all back up from Kelling.   Can you suggest one as I don't have a clue on what one to get.

Cheers

Cheers Chris,  a tad more than what I had in mind, but bit the bullet and ordered one.

Received and installed.    I can see that the dew controller was pulsing to 6 amps not good when the psu was 5 amps.

Sorted now though

I can see that the dew controller was pulsing to 6 amps not good when the psu was 5 amps.

Especially when you only really want to run these switched mode units at about 1/2 their duty current.

6 amps for a dew heater seems an awful lot, at 13.8 volts thats 80watts!
