building the dome
« on: 14:28:29, 10 October, 2016 »
After a spring/summer of no progress My observatory has finally made it back onto the acceptable jobs list!  I am now coming up to the construction of the actual dome, because of the size of the dome (3 metres diameter) it is important to keep the weight down so I am going for a system of skeletal ribs covered with fibreglass to add waterproofness and structural integrity.

However since fibreglass is nasty stuff to work with I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for alternative materials that could be substituted?

Why not try very thin gauge galvanised sheet or Ally... The other material i've seen used is waterproof hardboard with a thin topcoat of glass fibre..
