Clive I have an Atik EFW2 with unmounted filters which work fine, the real difference with mounted is ease of handling with the mounted version. With unmounted you can only touch the edge with of the glass when can be tricky fitting/removing and cleaning by etc.

Clive

36mm filters are 'normally' unmounted though I think ZWO do 36mm mounted for their now filter wheel. The Moravian 7 position filter wheel uses 36mm unmounted filters.

Its a nice setup as the filter wheel is controlled by the electronic in the camera so less wiring involved.

I use 36mm unmounted Clive and it's no problem at all... not least because once they are in the wheel you don't need to go near them anyway  ;) :D
