M13 (first light of my new Canon 6D modded on RC8)
« on: 23:00:07, 08 August, 2017 »
So far a very productive summer imaging season...after solving a banding problem using more proper flats technique (thanks again to Chris), I started testing the Canon with all my equipment...first one was not much to be seen in terms of modification being M13, but I used it to test as well the RC8 collimation

Anyway it was a good test to notice one unexpected advantage of the mod: the red channel that was usually the most noisy is now MUCH less noisy, probably just because it receives more signal, so overall images are less noisy and less green casted, Pixinsight somehow seems to like more modded images.

Anyway this is M13 with Altair Astro RC8 and Canon 6D modded and AT flattener, around 1h of exposures (5mins 800 iso), I imagined this a few years ago and this one (bigger scope and modded camera) is just so much better :)

That is a cracking M13 and that RC8 looks to be spot on.

Cheers Chris, yes I have to say is now two years and collimation basically never moved, this scope holds collimation surprisingly well! I use it only at home, but anyway I'm surprised...I was tempted to buy a FT focuser as the supplied one is bit crappy and stiff, but I decided to not touch it :D

Your suggested procedures for collimation worked first time and keep working for checking it, even if I have to say I use laser only to verify that focuser is sitting square(ish) with scope pointing down and rotating laser in focuser, then a cheshire is all I need to quickly check that seconday/primary are ok.

On my full frame I can see there's a very slight tilt that make stars on the far right less focused than the rest, but I decided to live with it as in stacking then is not visible anymore. I did some tests and the tilt is between camera/flattener and not scope, as it rotates with the camera/flattener, so when I'll have some time I'll try adding some tilt between camera and flattener and I'll see if is enough to correct that even if not visible in stacks.

Cheers Mark, yes now that you say that I remember I actually exposed the core with a different set of subs I think of 1 minute or so!
