Title: UKAI Collaborative Effort - September 2013 - Eastern Veil
Post by: chris.bailey on 12:33:01, 28 August, 2013
The idea for a collaborative effort has been muted before but not really progressed beyond people saying they like the concept. The basic idea is that as many people as possible upload their data for an object to a common repository and then get to share in the full data set that accumulates. Yes it is fraught with complications but nothing ventured nothing gained and all that.

So as a bit of an experiment we have set up a Dropbox with sub folders for L, R, G, B, Ha, OIII and SII. If anyone wants access could they pm me an email account and I will grant access. If you can then upload calibrated FITS frames to the relevant sub-directory making sure you include the sub duration in the file name (putting the filter name in there too would be a handy check). Eastern Veil (NGC6992, 6995) was choosen as being of a scale and brightness that is widely accessible and good in RGB and NarrowBand. The image below shows how it should frame up in a range of scopes and cameras.

We will run this from now until the end of September (please only post up data collected in 2013) which should give some time to accumulate data following which we will see what people can make out of the processing. A lot of processing software struggles with combining data from different setups. Pixinsight certainly handles it so it may be that one of us PI users will do initial alignment of the various subs but we can face that when we get to it.

If it works we will have a nice dataset to play with on those cloudy nights and we will run similar events in future.

Two lots of Narrowband data on there now folks. Peter Vaseys most excellent Ha, SII and OIII stacks and my own from the last few nights making 20 odd hours in total I believe.

Could do with some LRGB  ;)

Hi,

It could be my dropbox account which is the standard 2GB but if I try to accept the shared link I'm told it will exceed my limit.

I've checked and have over a GB of free space, how much is there in the share??

John

About 2.5GB. Soon adds up with 33mb .fits files

I had forgotten a bout this.  Is data collected before September acceptable?  If so you can PM me with the Drpbox details if you want my data.  Some in LRGB and some in NB.

sounds like a plan!

I don't use darks with my stuff these days - just a collection of Bias frames... I'll upload calibrated with bias FITS

OK...

NGC 6992 in Ha (1200s & some 600s), and 1200s both OIII & SII uploaded into relevant dirs (under sub-dir of psjshep)

All have been calibrated with Bias removed, (don't do darks these days) but NOT aligned (registered)

Hate to appear thick but... Where exactly do we upload them to?

Good Stuff

Just done a quick stack of Phi's, ChrisH's and my Ha data and got this. About 7 hours in all. Will have a go at the other channels when I get a mo

Chris,

Just curious but how have you stacked the data if they're from different set ups with different chip sizes and pixel sizes etc? DSS doesn't do that does it? Or am I getting confused.

Thanks,
Phil.

Phil

Pixinsight does it and also includes distortion correction so will correct for uneven field flatness between imaging setups, which is useful when you are combining data from setups with differing fields of view and for widefield panaramas. It is a lot more involved than using DSS but can pretty much sort out anything you chuck at it and very flexible.

Ha & OIII

Nice one Rog. In Ha that makes about 15 hours of data. I have just set PI off registering it all which took a couple of hours yesterday with fewer files.

By my reckoning there is 11 hours+ of  Ha and 13 hours+ of OIII.

My take on 11 hours of Ha data and 13 hours of OIII data from 4 very different setups and presented as an Ha:OIII Bicolour. There is a hint of the borders of the different datasets but worth including for the little Ha and OIII wisps in the bottom corner. At full resolution the depth of detail in incredible and I was very pleasantly suprised at how controlled the stars remained in the pulling as pushing needed to get frames from the differing setups to match up.

Processing this lot is not for the faint hearted!

Chris

Just chuck all the subs in together in PI's Star Alignment tool. Pick one of the wider field subs as a reference and tick distortion correction and then click GO. Come back a couple of hours later (and that was on a 16 core 32GB workstation at work) and they are all aligned ready for stacking. I did run those that needed it through the hot pixel tool first. The Star Alignment tool is now very powerful indeed and will deal with most things you throw at it. Out-turn FWHM was about 1.5 pixels which I reckon is a very fine result (about 3.5").

Still on one of our 3-d graphics workstation at work (I think the distortion correction would have taken a whole day on my normal processing laptop). I'll bang it up onto Dropbox tomorrow.

Done. I have also stuck the Ha and OIII(registered) stacks on there in case anyone else fancies having a play, without the hassles of registering and stacking.

You guys probably have enough Ha but if this is of any use let me know. I shot this a month ago and it was never used as I decided to move on to constellation Cygnus. It is far from perfect but could add another layer of data if needed!

I had forgotten all about this  "little" project. Would be nice to have the data, I have some more too so must add that in to the mix . If you pm me an email address I'll drop you a link to the dropbox folder.

Most of the stuff in there is just Eastern Veil. It would be interesting to do the same for the whole thing but that might be a step too far. I have updated the Dropbox files and added a few more and integrated again to an Ha_Composite and an OII_Compsite. the Ha is now around 16 hours and the OIII around 11. With a bit of fiddling I get this -

If it is of interest  data for Pickering's triangle  can be found here, I am sure  Epicycle   wont mind. You could send him a request though astrobin!

Trow - I know exactly what you mean, I feel the same on the rare occasion I go shopping!

Phil - probably sub-optimal. Most of the images in here have an image scale of 2-4 arc seconds/pixel. Going much below that starts to have some funny side effects. It would be fun to really crowd source one of these objects (100+hours) and see what comes out of it.
