Title: How can you tell if a DSLR has been modded?
Post by: Nedstark on 11:11:20, 14 May, 2017
There are lots of secondhand DSLRs for sale that claim to be astro-modded. How can you tell if this is true?  More to the point , apart from showing you the receipt what can you ask from the seller to prove the mod has been done. I hope I'm not coming over as ridiculously paranoid but....

Not much more than that. I think I may ask for details of the mod (filter replacement used etc), shutter count and if possible astro photos taken with it. At the end of the day though it comes down to a bit of trust..

If you can physically handle the camera, set it to auto white balance and take a shot of something white, it if has a quite strong red tint when viewing the image then the filter over the ccd has been removed. You could always ask the seller to do the same if you can't handle it. Whether the mod has been done well or not is a different matter.

Thanks koootzz. Your reply begs the next question. How can you tell if the mod has been done well?  I have a specific EOS 1100d in mind - it's on Astrobuysell for a seemingly low £110. As it comes with a lens I would guess the filter has been replaced not just removed. Apparently an Astronomiser mod.

Thought I might be coming across as a bit paranoid.

If its an Astronomiser modded camera then it has been done well, no question. I'm not sure if Andy keeps a log of the serial numbers of the cameras he has done, worth dropping him an email? There's several things that show on a bodged camera, dirt on the ccd, sensor not aligned properly, malfunctioning of any of the camera functions.

Must say that £110 sounds low for modified camera (as modification alone is £85.
But guess it's right as there's a modified Canon 1000D for £140.

Andy (Astronomiser) is well trusted and is (was ??) a member here.

If you do mirror lock up, or a 30 second exposure, you can see the sensor and it will not have the pale cyan IR blacking filter on it if its been modded. An auto WB shot will give reddish green foliage.

I do Nikons with the same thing.
