Strange "object" near Ursa Major
« on: 09:20:01, 16 September, 2004 »
Didn't get much done last night - Seeing was attrocious!

However, I noticed a very wierd object near Ursa Major - Extended the length of the pointers and then some... Managed to get a pic which I'll post later.  It looked like a long, very thin cloud that just didn't move (rest of the sky was subject to patchy cloud that WAS moving)

Any ideas?

Feint Aurora ??

There was a CME which brushed past Earth around 20.00UT on 14th Sept and a mid lattitude aurora watch was instigated, but I didn't see anything this far South (52 deg North)

Hi Andy

I agree with Eddie....sounds like it could be whats sometimes called a quiet ray.....a single searchlight like beam of auroral activity down a magnetic field line.....looks white to the naked eye but when photographed with Fujichrome 400 shows it to be more towards ultraviolet.....ionized nitrogen.
Your image may reveal this if thats what it is....

I photographed something that night - thought it was strange looking - but dismissed it for high fast moving cloud but it did look strange see picture :-
