Help is at hand
« on: 19:49:02, 17 August, 2007 »
Hi all,
I love seeing the sterling work done by our new imagers but I also notice that sometimes it can be frustrating when you know you have captured good data but have no idea what to do with it.
With this in mind we've asked our members if they would help, and as I expected, they said yes.
Here's how it works,
You upload the raw data, they process it for you and they then tell you exactly how they've done it.
Sound good?
If you think so and you need help post your files in this topic.

I second the great idea :urock: :urock:

It's one thing catching the photons  in a bucket but for me the work that comes afterwards is steeped in mystisism. I've been playing with a stack of 14x5min exp of M31 taken with a 300D. Can I do anything with the processing??? ??? Putting it politely, no :(  Though I think a 6MP TIFF image my exceed the upload limits  ;)

Have Karma for sorting that one out, Mojo.

Excellent idea Mojo, processing certainly is one of the darker arts of astro imaging.

As for file sizes, it would probably be easier to upload a 'reduced' image to the boards and have an external link to the the high resolution imagery, or request image transfers via mail to interested participants fo processing, then the final results posted so that comparisons and processing details can be seen.

If you want to send big files to other people - take a look at things like YouSendIt - it allows you to send files up to 100Mb in size.  It's what I use to send files across the pond to Noel.

What a great idea and fantastic that many of the people who are in the "know" are willing to contribute.

 :big_clap: to you all.

Just a suggestion, but is it maybe worth having a seperate child board in either Image Processing, or Newcomer's corner - where people can start a separate thread for each image they'd like someone to have a play with.

The current thread is somewhat hidden away in the Image Processing Challenge board, and being one long thread, it can be confusing when replying to multiple requests.

I'm just trying to figure out why it's so underused. I'm sure plenty more newcomers would like some help with their shots (or just seeing what they could get out of them). Even though I now consider my image processing skills fairly good, I know there'll always be someone else who can make my shots look better (*cough*noel*cough*) or at least just have a different take on it which may look more appealing.

Image processing is just a steep a learning curve as imaging itself, and you may not always improve on both at an equal rate. I'm always amazed at going back on my earliest shots and seeing how much more I can now squeeze out of them :nerd:

...just a thought,
