Book Review - The New Zone System for Astro Imaging
« on: 14:02:00, 26 September, 2007 »
This only arrived yesterday, but it's been read cover to cover, not hard at only 240 pages, but wow...what a 240 page feast it is.

Taking it in context with the last Ron Wodaski Book  "The New CCD Astronomy", this book initially looks a bit thin on the ground, but the real beauty of it, and something I am still ploughing through is the DVD which accompanies the book. Packed with video tutorials, powerpoint presentations, and additional chapters, as well as over 2.5GB of demo images, this really does make the book come alive, and for those with short attention spans, really helps you along through some of the trickier parts.

The DVD contents break down as follows, and are navigable from a simple web interface.

Video Tutorials - embedded movie files - excellent stuff, very well paced so far and good content

The Science Behind Atomic Emission Lines - Useful for anyone thinking of doing narrowband imaging

Workflow for taking images - One of the best bits, simple, but a handy reference

Image Files for Book Tutorials - Invaluable

PowerPoint Presentations - Including some of the original presentations Ron made on Astro Imaging

Class 1: The Zone System Theory and Practice

Class 1B: Color Balancing

Class 1C: Calibration

Introduction to CCD Imaging

Original One-Day CCD Imaging Workshop

Understanding and Controlling Seeing

The Zone System Theory and Practice

Zone System Practice: IC 1795

Zone System Practice: Cocoon Nebula

Zone System Practice: LRGB Processing
Tools

GradientXTerminator - Free software

New Astronomy Press Tools - more free software

So as you can see, that alone justifies the $99 price tag, and the full colour, and detailed images and steps in the book (star selection and elongation removal being so far the most interesting bit for me!), make this a keeper. I have the first Wodaski book, which I now use as a permanent reference point, this one, whilst only on loan, is something I aim to buy in the near future...it's that good...and a powerful addition to anyone's toolset for imaging.

It's going to be hard to pass this on in 4 weeks...

I have not yet read this book but thank you for sharing with us your review about this book The New Zone System for Astro Imaging by Ron Wadaski. At least we got an idea on what the book is. So if we read this book sometimes, we already know what this book is.

I've just been searching, and discovered via the ICE in SPACE forum. The book is know longer in print.

It is a bit narrow-minded of the authors I think. For such an invaluable tome as this.

Thanks Mike - they want another $60.00 on top of the price for Shipping..  Makes it about $120.00 or around £78.00

Can anyone beat the price?
