Hosting and Posting images on UKAI.
« on: 09:26:54, 19 October, 2007 »
UKAI limits attachment size to 250Kb and maximum of 750Kb per post.  After a few weeks all attachments are deleted as the database is cleaned to keep it to a manageable size.

We appreciate that this is sometimes a very small file size for modern format cameras but demands on bandwidth restrict us to this limit.

There are plenty of other options for hosting images on the internet which I will leave others to comment on as I don't personally use these.

What I do:

Host a large version of the image on my personal website.
Create a smaller version by resizing and reducing image quality from High to Medium in photoshop - I normally aim to have an image of somewhere between 500px to 1000px wide.
Post the smaller image and include a link to the larger one.

Right, well I've been using ImageShack for a while now: allows all the common image formats (including TIF) up to 1.5 MB.  All free.  You don't have to register to upload a file, but it's advisable to do so because you can then 'remember' your links and delete your images at will.  Registration simply consists of supplying a valid E-mail address.

Note that ImageShack provides a clickable thumbnail option - useful if you want to be nice and friendly to UKAI'ers with slow internet connections!

Many other people use Photobucket - also free, on that one I believe you have to register and the limit is 1 MB.
