Bahtinov mask generator
« on: 16:42:47, 30 September, 2008 »
Hadn't heard of this until yesterday (must get out more!) but from what I have read on CN forum they are the doggies danglies when it comes to focus acuracy, and I need all the help I can get after seeing my dissapointingly fuzzy images from the weekend so I will certainly be giving a homemade version a run out

anyway I found a generator for the mask which some of you may be interested in using to make your own  http://astrojargon.net/maskgen.aspx

not sure what format it outputs in as I am at work atm so cant try it out until I get back home tonight

Anyone already using one of these?

The guys on IceandSpace back in Oz seem to be having tremendous success with it!!!
There's various .DXF files available to allow it to be laser cut from 0.8-1.2mm sheet.
Seems to work very well on star images.

Looks pretty good - I'd have more confidence in that than the fine focus in Nebulosity. when the seeing is bad its like trying to thread a needle on a fairground ride...

Who's got laser cutting capabilities on here then ;)

I might try a card one initially - I'm handy with a scalpel and a metal rule... Hell of a lot of stuff to fill in though!!

you can open it in firefox but you need the Adobe SVG viewer plugin for it to work (google it) and then you only get a rasterised image but good enough to work from, otherwise you can open it in any vector based drawing package such as corel draw, illustrator or freehand

I have printed out one to make a mask for the ED80 though it certainly looks like its gonna require some serious patience with the craft knife, need to source some thin black plastic first too  :surprise:

Cool find Ade!  8)

Just to add to you list of software, since most folk wont have any of the commercial programs, here is a great little open source program called inkscape:

I saw this on CN too... wondering if its more a visual observers tool then for imager's. How does this compare
with something like a robofocus ?

Can't get out to test myself, observatory still a way to go till completion but was wondering if someone could
do a comparison?

I've seen this used in conjunction with Nebulosity fine focus and it works brilliant. No need to get anything laser cut or to get the scalpel out, just print it out on inkjet transparancies and stick them together. Even the slightly hazy ones work fine. It's pretty non-fussy when it comes to accuracy apparently.

There is a firm selling pre-made ones in the US for loads of money.

The SVG file created by the generator will open in Firefox (or Adobe Illustrator or similar). The website should be fine in any browser.

Printing the SVG file from Firefox will be tricky if it runs over more than one page though. Might need to do a screen capture and fiddle with it in a grpahics package.

BTW... this animation shows perfectly how it works...

Gonna be making mine this evening

EDIT :: In fact I just knocked one up using some old OHP film I had in the office, printed via the free software Inkscape to a laserjet and photocopied onto two sheets of transparency. Overlapped and stuck at the edges. I'll let you know how I get on (if it's clear).
