I am absolutely hopeless at making these sorts of things!

Stop being a pansy and get that knife out  :tease:

its actually not as difficult as I thought it would be, if you mess about with the settings in the generator you can get something wich isnt too difficult to cut out, I dont see why they have to have hundreds of vanes, just select enough so that its 'do-able'

mine took about half hour to cut out and tonight it has been mounted on a temporarily-suitable holder, so tonights the night for testing, fingers crossed

Can someone help me out on this ?    I have the know how to cut but i don't understand all the measurement that are required for input.  All i can answer is the clear apeture, central obstuction & F/L.    I input these & generate but the printout it gave me looks nothing like it should.

My C/A is 203mm
C/O is 65mm
F/L 812

Cheers

Ok to add to above i may have sorted the measurements out but when printing on A4 I'm about 1/8th missing from the side.    So the next question is.   Using a home printer how do i get it to print the whole thing ?  Or how do i get to print two halves.

That was indeed my concern, Ade. Here is the Bahtinov it produced for my Megrez 90:

I am not bad with a craft knife but that could be very fiddly. If I reduce Bahtinov factor to 75 or 50, I get something which might be more sensible to cut out. Is that what you did?

Alternately I suppose I could try printing it out on a transparency.

Edit: it's the wrong bloody size when Firefox prints it out.  :ugly: I told you I needed an off the shelf one.

I've reduced the Bahtinov factor by 1/3 as suggested and I get a much easier template.

Use Inkscape for printing the mask in two halves.

Yep, as John says above, reduce the factor (i used 100) and then you can also reduce the no of lines (i used 8, or 9) until you get something which isnt too difficult to cut but neither too coarse either, I think the finer would be better, but a compromise for ease of build is required here

I tried mine out last night on a distant neighbours security light and it works a treat visually, hope to do a proper test later if it stays clear

John how do you do this ?   As i said it doesn't quite fit on a A4 so two halves would work a treat.

Install Inkscape. Save SVG file somewhere. Open Inkscape and drag SVG file into the blank A4 page that Inkscape defaults to. Put it to one side of the page and print. Drag it across to the other side and print again (or leave it where it is and flip it L-R from one of the menus).

Cheers John.  I'm getting there but it's not printing a half at a time printing what it bloody wants.  I'm running out of ink at a fast rate.   Is there anyway i can print a dotted version so i can save ink.  As i don't print that much & run out i don't know when i wil refill it.

You could print it in draft mode, that should save some ink. That was the way I got it to print from Inkscape seemed to work OK on different PCs and printers.

I made a new one out of card and surrounded it with rubber to keep it on the scope.
It's not pretty but I like it. Here's a 2 second snap of capella apparently in focus and a 2 minute exposure to prove it.

I made mine from card and used it to modify an old focus mask, I did look out last night but it looked almost soupy, hopefully get to try it in anger next wek sometime (the  night between a free day at a brewery and a half marathon (ok that's tomorrow but you know) the weather would haev to have been perfect to tempt me out).  I'm looking forward to some pin sharp focussed images soon.

Ive been watching the interest develop on this focussing mask; originally on the IceInSpace forums, now over here.
It seems to be catching everyone's attention, why???..... because it works!!

In an effort to maximise the opportunities to the amateur community I've made contact with a local guy who uses a small laser cutter. Won't be able to discuss "details" until Tuesday, but until then I'd like to know the favourite mask sizes required by UKAI members ( might help in discussions!)
I've got an ED80, 10" and 12" Meade SCT available to measure. What other sizes??
Really only need clear aperture and maximum diameter ( to fit inside the dew shield/ objective cell)
No promises, but I'll try to get prices etc
Keep you posted.
