Hello geniuses. I'm considering trying to record planetary neb images with the watec (actually I've been doing that on and off for ages) but this time I would like to record spectra. I imagine that mono is inherently more sensitive but is the actual spectra still as useable as a colour one? I do wonder if if its possible anyway when the magnitude of the average pn is over 8 -9. I'm not sure how to do it - diffraction grating or spend the dosh on the staranalyser. 'keep it simple stupid'...etc  Its going on the lx90 8".  Any advice folks welcome folks.  John

Change is good...yes?  LX90 8" on a wedge in the eternal pursuit of a decent picture. Still got the 12.5" dobs and the 6" f8 refractor and the little 80mm ED. Nearly 2 dozen eyepieces and loads of tat, modded 300D,watec 120n and that git of a farmer ... an understanding wife but I would like a Drew!

We don't actaully use color in the spectrum!!
A sensitive B&W is much better! Some of the guys in Oz they are using DMK21's very successfully.
I'd recommend the Star Analyser as a very good starting point. This can easily record the spectrum of a 9 or 10 mag star.
Easy to use, and easy to calibrate. You need to download Vspec a freeware program to analyse your spectrum.
