January Sky Guide 2012

Full moon on the 9th, new moon on the 23rd. The moon will appear close to Jupiter on the 2nd, Mars on the 13th and Venus on the 26th. Another difficult crescent may be visible on the 22nd (1.2%).

The Quadrantids reach maximum on the 3rd.


Mercury is visible in Sagittarius before dawn until the middle of the month.

Venus visible after sunset in Capricornus until the 11th when it crosses into Aquarius.
Mars rising late evening in Leo at the beginning of the month before crossing into Virgo.

Jupiter viewable in Pisces until the 5th before crossing into Aries. In the early hours of the 4th Ganymede and Europa will cast their shadows across the surface of the planet.

Saturn visible in Virgo throughout the month.

Comets visible this month (to mag 12)

Garradd C2009/P1 in Hercules
Levy P/2006 T1 in Pisces
Giacobini-Zinner in Aquila

Early evening passes will occur until the 6th, pre-dawn passes will begin from the 14th.

Deep Sky

Best deep sky imaging is from the 16th

There are too many targets to choose from this month, for those imaging earlier the winter constellations have something for everyone. Later in the night the spring galaxy will begin to appear for anyone wanting to have an early crack at them.
