February Sky Guide 2012

Full moon on the 7th, new moon on the 21st. There are 2 lunar crescent opportunities this month, 22nd and 23rd. The crescent on the 22nd will be very difficult being only 0.9% illuminated (19 hours old).
The moon occults the Crab nebula on the 3rd. Whilst not being an event suitable for imaging it may present a visual challenge.
On the 25th the moon will lie close to Venus (approx 2.5 degrees separation).

Mercury is not visible until the last couple of days of the month.

Venus visible after sunset in Aquarius until the 3rd when it crosses into Pisces.
Mars rising late evening in Leo brightening throughout the month -0.6 mag to -1.2 mag.

Jupiter viewable in Aries throughout February until late evening.

Saturn visible in Virgo throughout the month.

Comets visible this month (to mag 12)

Garradd C2009/P1 in Hercules

ISS Passes

There will be early morning passes of the ISS to the 3rd. Evening passes will begin on the 13th until the end of the month.
For 10 day listings for your location please check (free registration required).

Deep Sky

Best deep sky imaging is from the 14th

A slight change to the guide this month. Instead of listing a few objects I'll print a south facing sky chart for the middle of the month at 10pm.
vixen 60s, modded 1000D, modded 300D, DSI I, 10" dob (work in progress), some other bits and a stupendous talent for attracting cloud!
