March Sky Guide

Full moon on the 8th, new moon on the 22nd. Lunar crescent opportunities are on the 21st, 23rd and 24th. On the 25th there will a good opportunity for an image of the crescent moon with Jupiter and Venus close by.


Venus and Jupiter will be in conjunction on the 13th (3 degree separated)

Mercury visible during the first half of March, reaching greatest eastern elongation on the 5th.

Venus will be visible through the month in the evening reaching greatest elongation on the 27th, making it visible for over 4 ½ hours after sunset.

Mars reaches opposition on the 3rd in Leo and is visible all night long, reaching mag -1.2 at opposition before fading to -0.8 by the end of the month.

Jupiter is visible in the evening until around 10.30pm in Aries.

Saturn rises around 10pm in Virgo becoming earlier as the month passes.

Comets visible this month (to magnitude 12)

Deep Sky

Best deep sky imaging for March is from the 15th to the 30th.
