Siebert Optics PST Focus Adapter with Canon DSLR
« on: 22:53:57, 18 June, 2012 »
Siebert Optics, an American company makes adapters of 3 different magnifications 1.5x, 1.75x amd 2x to allow imagers to be focused with the Coronado PST.  This is the link: www.siebertoptics.com/PST%20focus%20adaptors.html

What is missing from the site is a list of which imagers will work with each of the adapters.  I would like to be able to use my Canon DSLR through the PST.  I sort of can now but only by using a very unwieldy setup including a Televue 2.5x powermate and eyepiece projection.  The Siebert Optics solution is much neater.

I suspect that only the 2x version would provide enough extra focus (more than the 40mm offered by the 1.75x) but the higher magnification may also mean that I might not get the whole solar disc in frame.

Does anyone have experience with these adapters?

Welcome to UKAI Peter !

My recommendation would actually be to spend the $149 not on an adapter but on a QHY5 and image using a webcam rather than trying to do it using a DSLR (unless you have a specific reason you want to use a DSLR ?).

Apolologies if you already know this but Solar imaging is just like lunar and planetary imaging and is much much much better served using high frame count imaging (500 frames +) and stacking rather than single shot or even x10 frames.  This being due to the real prblems with atmospheric distortion making it almost impossible to capture a single frame that is in focus through a PST ?

Is there a particular reason you want to use a DSLR ?

Thanks for your reply.

My main imaging is nocturnal on deep sky objects so I've not been investing too much money for solar/planetary.  I would not pay $149 for the adapter for exactly the reasons you state but I have had an offer for a like new x1.5 Siebert adapter for $50US that might have been acceptable (but only if it would allow focus) while I save up and wait for a used DMK41.  I think that the DMK41 would let me capture full disk but those who have them seem to be keeping them.

I was hoping that someone might tell me that the x1.5 would achieve focus but no-one (four sites tried) seems to have experience using the Siebert adapters with a DSLR.  That suggests that they probably do not achieve focusr or that they aren't used for the very reasons you mention.

Yeap, I'd probably say it's the latter rather than the former !

You're also right in saying you don't see many/any DMK41's on the second hand market.  I have one and it would have to be prised from my dead hand before I give it up (unless I win the lottery of course and upgrade).
