Need help choosing setup
« on: 11:22:15, 29 October, 2012 »
Hi

I'm currently in the middle of purchasing a Skywatcher Evostar ED80 (OTA only) with a Max DSLR 2 inch camera adaptor and an 80mm extension tube to use for Astroscoping birds etc.

I've been really impressed with some of the deep sky images and was wondering what I would need to add to add to this to take images with my Nikon D300.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Links too if you have them at hand.

Cheers Lee

Hi Lee, welcome to the forum... any chance of an introduction on the Introductions board?

You do not say what mount you have at the moment, but suspect that it is just a tripod if you just have used your equipment for bird spotting.

The mount is arguably the most important part of the kit - from that, you can decide which scope you are able to use and without a good mount, long exposure astrophotography is out of the question.

Hi Phil, Intro sorted

Just using a gimbal head on a tripod at the minute.

Reading through some of the posts, people seem to be leaning towards the EQ5 mount. Will this be OK for me or would it be overkill?

Should I just get the EQ mount or a goto mount?

Is there any eyepieces I'll need seeing as I've only got the optical tube?

Sorry for all the noob questions.

Never need to apologies for questions... noob or otherwise.

A large number of people are using HEQ5's (Syntreks & Pro models) & EQ6's (Syntreks or NEQ6 Pro is the new model).

An alternative is the Ioptron mounts from Altair Astro (iEQ30 &  iEQ45 )

It depends on how far you want to go... there is an opensource project called EQMod which basically is the transport layer to allow planetarium programs software control the EQ mount (HEQ5 & EQ6/NEQ6), and allows guide corrections to be issues back to the mount for long exposure photography. There is a load of information for configuration on this forum here. Each of these mounts are GOTOs (correct me someone if I got something wrong here)

All of those mounts can be used from the handset which comes with it, and via a cable from the computer to handset but the EQMod is for most of us the best route.

For visual use, there are a HOARD of different options, as well as many recommendations from people. Personally, I use a Baader click zoom eyepiece as it combines 5 eyepieces in one (8, 12, 16, 20 & 24mm) as my experience with it has been very good. Others may disagree.

Will have a read up on the EQMod.

IF I remember correct Syntrek models are not goto, just the pro/synscan models.
Whether you need goto or not depends on the money and if want to learn the night sky so you can orientate your way to your targets.
