Widefield Imaging Competition 2013

It's that time of year again folks, and we are pleased to finally announce the details of a new UKAI Imaging Competition.

UKAI has teamed up with Altair Astro to bring you the Widefield Imaging Competition 2013
and thanks to Altair Astro's support, we can offer a superb prize of the much talked about ...

iOptron SkyTrackerTM v2 DSLR Tracking Mount with Polar-Scope

About the Prize

The SkyTrackerTM makes it easy to take long exposures of the night sky without star trailing, allowing you to photograph incredibly faint detail in the night sky with any DSLR or even a compact camera. In fact any digital camera capable of long exposures will work.

The SkyTrackerTM is very simple to set up, just attach the unit to a standard camera tripod and affix your digital camera to the (optional) ball and socket head. Align the SkyTrackerTM to Polaris, using the included illuminated polar scope,  then turn on the motor and it keeps your camera accurately tracking at the same speed as the earth rotates! The unique DC servo motor keeps your camera in motion to avoid star trails and allows you to take long exposures for beautiful images of the night sky. You can also download a polar alignment app for your Android or Apple smartphone to assist with your alignment.

The SkyTrackerTM runs on 4xAA batteries for portability at any location, and is small enough to fit into your camera bag alongside your existing equipment, so you never need to be without a tracking platform ever again, wherever you go!

Quite simply innovative portability on the move!

About The Competition

The competition is open to all current existing members of UKAI with 25+ posts, and the theme is 'W I D E F I E L D'

We are looking for entries that show the beauty of the night sky from a wider perspective, this could be an ultra-wide fish eye image of the majestic milky-way galaxy crossing a mountainous landscape, or a widefield mosaic of one of our favourite constellations peppered with familiar nebulosity, or maybe that forthcoming Comet Ison, that is hopefully going to give us all a show of a lifetime come the end of the year, the choice is yours, as we want to see images which encompass the natural beauty and dynamics of the night-sky, in a widefield scenario.

Above all it must be inspiring and beautiful to win the judges hearts! not to mention being technically excellent.

Widefield

We do insist that all images entered have a 'wide field of view'.

We define this as taken at an equivalent focal length of no more than 200mm using a standard APS sized chip for a single image, (which is approximately 6.5 x 4.5 degrees of sky) although we will be accepting multiple-pane mosaic images, providing the finished image covers an equvalent, or wider proportion of sky to be in-keeping with the widefield theme.

The competition is open until midnight on Friday 20th December 2013, and we will accept any image taken since 1st April 2013. A maximum of 3 images can be entered from each member.

All entries must be posted in the official UKAI Widefield Competition Entries thread HERE, and images should be precisely 900 pixels on their widest edge, and accompanied by the following information:

Description/Location;
Date image made;
Camera used;
Lens used;
Exposure details;

External URL links to higher resolution images may also be included with the original entry, but an image must be uploaded to the UKAI forum.

Many thanks to all who have entered the UKAI Widefield Imaging Competition 2013, the deadline for entries has now passed.

We have received a great number of entries, despite the fact that comet Ison failed to appear as promised into our skies as predicted, as the competition was timed to ensure a good window of opportunity for that event, but I have to say that the quality and diversity of the images entered is extremely high, and it is going to be a very difficult task for all involved in the judging process to choose a shortlist, and an eventual winner

The judging process will begin shortly, and we hope to be able to announce the results early in the new year, I wish all of you good luck for the competition, and also good tidings for the Christmas period ahead, and hope that we get some clear skies over the holiday period to enjoy.

Once again, thank you for all the wonderful images entered, it really is a great pleasure to see them

Just to keep you all updated - the judging process is thoroughly underway, as usual this process is fraught with complication and difference of opinion, but we hope to bring you a result within a couple of weeks, please bear with us
