Thinking of Altair ing my Kit
« on: 21:12:15, 27 January, 2014 »
Hi
One of my scopes that I currently have is a Sky-Watcher Evostar ED80 PRO Refractor.  I'm mulling over the idea of a major upgrade to a  Altair Wave 115 F7 ED TRIPLET APO. Reading the reviews and the specs the Altair appears to be a much better bit of kit. Given that the Altair would be a significant investment are the optics that much better than my Evostar?(are they £1ks worth better )   I would plan to use it both for visual and as a strong foundation as I progress through the challenge of Astrophotography (currently just on the first rung)

More aperture and therefore higher resolution potential. Longer focal length. Better colour correction. Flatter field. Much better focuser.

Whether that is all worth £1k is a tough call. The ED80's are a great scope (hence it being our recommendation) and after that improvements start to get expensive. Would I swap my very expensive Tak FSQ for an ED80...no!

Getting an Altair Wave 115 F7 ED TRIPLET APO is easier said than done. I have had one on order since the beginning of January, and the latest (optimistic?) forecast is that I might see it in March!

Williams Optics FLT110. Older ones had the better optics but the newer ones have a better focuser. Needs a flattener for imaging but so does the Altair. Once considered to be the poor mans Tak FSQ106.

APM 107

Espirit 120 - fine now they have sorted out the problems

Well done the deed just taken delivery of an Altair Astro 115EDT with 10x60mm Finder scope + 3" Planostar and Iopton IEQ45. My order for clear skies seems to have got lost in the post :(
