Is it me or is it darker
« on: 08:52:14, 27 August, 2014 »
I have been out on the obsy the past couple of nights putting everything back together, getting FocusMax curves and the like. The scattered clouds cleared at about 11 last night and it seemed that the Milky Way, which is now pretty much overhead, was a lot more visible than this time last year. I could always see it with semi averted vision but this year it is very clear and there is even some discernable structure in the dark lanes. No science to back this up but it does look to me as though the low energy changeover is having some impact on the general sky glow.

Around here Chris we're being switched to LED street lights which are supposed to reduce the sky glow  I'm yet to be convinced and was out last night which seemed very poor skies (mind you I have just come back from Dalby Forest star party so have been spoilt a little  :big_clap: )

I hope your skies are darker like you say  I'll report on how things seem round here once the skies clear

We've just switched to whitish LED streetlamps, and it does seem that there is far less light 'bouncing around' off buildings, etc. While the lights are quite bright in themselves, the shadows are much sharper and darker, so when you look up, if you're in shadow, the sky does actually seem darker...

I also noticed this a couple of weeks ago.     Milky way was visable and m31 was with adverted vision.

But a day or so later with another clear night it wasn't. So I put it down to a very good night for seeing.

I would have said the same Roger but having just tried to do some PEC and Focus runs, the seeing was awful. Perhaps just that the transparency was good so less light bouncing around.

Perhaps just being hopeful

I have noticed less illumination of houses around me where the LED streetlights have been fitted, and my back garden is darker. But I think we have just had a run of good clarity this month, I have be able to make out the MW quite easily several times.
Long may it continue!

We do have our lights out @ 1am bst 12 gmt. (Bar the 2 that light up a part of the garden)   but my observation was with them out.   You can see a difference at this time but it doesn't seem much.

I've been able to make out the Milky Way quite clearly over head just south of Lincoln city in Washingborough and also Andromeda with averted vision which makes lining up my shots really easy with the astrotrac! ha. Not sure if there's less light pollution, I don't think so as I've emailed the local parish councils and lincoln city council about light pollution, changing bulbs, turning the lights down/off at certain times and they're all been met with refusal so far. Disappointing but expected I guess.
