Did I get a Ping ?
« on: 21:13:38, 12 September, 2014 »
I am hoping someone can tell me if I successfully captured some meteor pings using an SDR USB stick and a home made S & N / B & Q Yagi ? I followed all of the hints & tips but I have had to do a lot of experimenting and adjusting of audio input and output, spectrum display and even laptop microphone.
For my first attempts a few weeks ago I didn't realise my laptop microphone was picking up sound and displaying on the spectrum.
Then I found I was getting lots of static and it was only eventually when I experimented with the audio input and output on SpecLab that I happened upon the correct settings (I think !)
For the first two the radio was tuned to 143.049 and a ping appeared at 1000 Hz whereas for the second two it was tuned to 143.048 and it appeared at 2000 Hz.
I also definitely heard some faint pings

Yes they look like (weak) pings to me. They do have a characteristic sound on the audio so if you heard the carrier tone at the same time then you know for sure. The frequency (in Hz) at which they appear on the waterfall display is related to receiver tuning frequency.
