EQ8
« on: 19:50:39, 08 December, 2014 »
Hi,
I am in the market for a new mount and I thought the EQ8 would fit the bill. However in the past there seem to have been some issues with it and I was wondering if they have been resolved.
What do you think of your EQ8?
thank you for your help.

The issues I have read about are a none concentric gear which make the mount seize. Difficulties in balancing the mount if you don't use a polar scope. Linkage between the motor and I not absolutely sure broken.
Olly a person who has an astronomy B&B in France had to return the one he ordered because it wasn't working.
I personally would like to purchase one but those stories have me a little bit worried. I have used EQ6 in the past and I had a very good one and another not so good.

I think those initial problems of the out of round ring gears have been sorted but I have to receive a glowing report of one. People do seem to be getting them to work but you are getting into the serious mount money territory and I would not want to spend time fettling a mount when it should perform well out of the box. I hve not used one in anger but did get to handle one in the flesh a while back. There is lots to like about them but for me there is a lot of cheap plastic panelling and it does not ooze quality. Put it next to an iOptron CEM60 and I know where my money would go.

I'm not sure how much the EQ8 is or it's full specification, but I've just bought an Avalon Linear Fast Reverse as an upgrade to an EQ6 and I couldn't be happier. I don't think it has the same weight capacity as the CEM60 but that's all personal preference :)

Thank you for your replies. I have looked at the CEM60 and it seem to be really well received in the states. When you mentioned the CEM60 which one do you think would be the best value for money.

The CEM60 is settling down now after some initial software issues and seems to be well reviewed. Phil [pjshep] on here loves his. If you can run to the encoder version then I probably would. The mount seems to have been designed with encoders in mind but then reports from users of the standard version are good too. Its all a matter of £££.
