EQ8 & Scopes
« on: 13:01:36, 11 September, 2015 »
Hello All,

I have recently upgraded my mount from an EQ6 Pro to the EQ8 Pro and purchased a Atik 460EX mono to go with my Atik 383L+ camera.  I have also upgraded an old friend my Meade 5000 127mm Apo with a 2.5" Moonlite focuser and a set of 130mm Geoptik telescope rings. I also dug out an old 70mm scope to use as a finder (may swap this for my Altair mini-guider if the FOV needs enlarging).   I have also added a Atik OAG to the FSQ106ED, which so far appears to be performing well (albeit adapters between the EFW2 and the Tak proved tricky).

The Meade has always had good optics and dare I say a much underrated scope that really does perform well optically.  While the original focuser was fine for use visual use and with OSC cameras, once filter wheels etc were added there was a need to change the focuser.  I have to say my initial impressions of the Moonlite are very positive albeit I have yet to fully test the 460 in anger.

It has taken a few weeks to get to this stage of rebuilding and upgrading, chipping away of various little challenges, hopefully I can finish tweaking the remainder so that I can crack on in earnest with the coming season.

Thanks for looking, Jim

Thanks Chris.  The really shameful thing is that the cables are probably as tidy as they have ever been with a multi-scope set up.

Once I finish fettling (hopefully soon) I must make a concerted effort to really tidy them up.  (Understand your OCD, especially as the EQ8 has so many more protrusions for things to snag on in the dark!).

You should have seen it before I took the photo! I suspect the set up Chris uses would put us both to shame.  Jim

In my defence, my set up is taken down after imaging so I can't organise everything into a permanent rig...yet! Still, it's a bit of a birds nest at times :(

http://www.techflex.com/prod_pet.asp is the solution. Beware cheaper eBay imitations which are plain nasty. TechFlex is  really slippery so avoids snagging. They also do a wrap version which is more useful on portable setups where you want to add/remove cables but even then you can harness a bunch of cables up and put a wire tie at each end. Makes wiring it all up dead quick and most importantly to us CableOCD types...very neat!

Chris

ps you can get 10metres of the stuff on eBay for a few quid. Money very well spent!

Many thanks Chris, very helpful, I have saved the link for a future purchase.

You made me feel so guilty (there is a bit of OCD in all of us) I just spent the last couple of hours re-routing and tidying up my cables, which are now a little neater.  Once I have gone final (is there such a thing?) with my set-up I will follow-up the tech flex option.
