I was really looking forward to entering this competition but the weather's been diabolical recently!
Then came my window of opportunity. So with both hands around my camera I grasped it.
This is a star trail at the wind farm near my home in Harrogate North Yorkshire.
I really wanted to get the star Polaris dead centre to the turbine blades but unfortunately when I framed it I'd have to have been right under the turbine and it would have looked kind of odd!
I took around 190 frames but with the clouds and a bright moon that kept shining from behind the clouds I've removed quite a lot and in the end stacked around 90 frames.
So I hope you still get the feeling of the turbine blades rotating...
Canon 5dmk3. Canon 20mm f2.8 lens. ISO 400. 30 second exposure's. Stacked in Starstax
The white balance was set to "kelvin 2500". I did this because in the background on the horizon is the American radar base "Menwith Hill" there's more orange light polution from there than there is from the whole of Harrogate, so "kelvin" helped to lower this light pollution allowing me to use Lightroom to develop some of the  colouring to the photo.
Thanks

I am going to add this one in place of the Drakensberg image (third one I submitted) not sure how to remove the other submission?

On to the details for this one: Trio of Dancing Bears
Grabbed a short weather window on New Years Eve (which is also my wedding anniversary, so really this had better win or it could all end in divorce!  ;)) and popped up to Brimham rocks.  The rock formation in the foreground is known as the Dancing Bear, in the sky behind are Ursa Minor and Ursa Major (the little and big bear respectively) waltzing around the pole.  Also in the sky you can just about make out some faint green and red tinting which was an Auroral display, invisible to the naked eye but showed up in all my pictures last night!

Technical details:
ISO 200
18mm lens
f3.5
15 x 300 s untracked
1 x 300 s tracked to mark the end of the trails
light infill on the rocks = headtorch

all processing done in photoshop.

Many apologies for the delay in announcing the results of this competition, I have been extremely busy with work lately and have gotten behind with this. I will make an announcement over the weekend - good luck  :canadian:
