To Sequence Generator Pro uses
« on: 21:12:12, 30 October, 2015 »
I've only recently become aware of SGP as I noticed it on some posts and had a chat with Roger. It looks a good program to tie my gear together and get more out of it.
So is it good and are there any issues I should be aware of with setting up. What are people using for plate solving.

thanks
David

hi Dave,

As per our conversation,

I use Pin point,  as far as I'm aware this doesn't need internet to plate solve but it's at a cost,  I think Elbrus is a free plate solve and is compatible with SGP but I think you need a internet connection.     I've had my fair share of issues with SGP, but they seem to be behind me now,  I actually Semi successful  meridian flip tonight,  I'm half way there.     If you do get it don't forget I'm not that far from you I could always pop over

now I have it all in one package I like it,  I did go through a time where I did revert back to Maxim but that was only due to me not wanting to waste the Photons on a very good night.

I wouldn't be without myself. I also use PinPoint now but have used Elbrus in the past, and I still have Astrometry.net installed. There is a new plate solver that SGP can use called PlateSolve2 (from PlaneWave) but I have not used it myself since PinPoint does all I need, but it's (alegedly) better than Elbrus. With something this complex I'm sure you'll have minor issues setting the thing up, we all do, but all should be resolvable with a little tweaking :-) I have 4 OTAs (with/without reducers), two cameras, and 2 mounts so my equipment profiles are many and varied.

David,

I'm on the last 5 days of my free trial of SGP and i can say that i definitely will be purchasing it
It's nice to have everything in one place - the plate solving and framing alone is worth it in my eyes
I still haven't used it in anger yet (because of the weather!!) but that hasn't stopped me from wanting to purchase it

Well worth it if you ask me!

Mark

Ps i'm using astronomy.net for plate solving as i'm using a permanent set-up (couldn't get Elbrus to work  :duh: )

Mark,   does astronomy.net need a internet connection for or to plate solve  ?

Yes mate. I figured i might as well let the astronet sort everything out rather than trying to give Elbrus all the info it needs (works like a charm  ;) )

You can have a local installation too, I installed it on my hard disk. It's a tricky installation though so don't ask me how I did it! There are instructions on the SGP forum someplace.

thanks all, sounds like a way forward. I might wait till I get a part from the states to be able to use my OAG. I can install it, get used to things, get everything connected and still use my current system if there are teething problems.  Astronomy.net sounds good as i'm observatory based.

I'll also give a thumbs up.
I'd be lost with out it.
My only niggle is. It doesn't allow an automated solve and sync, for you to build a good pointing model.

I also use it for all my Astro Imaging. I've managed to get Elbrus to work after a long struggle with it. It needs accurate plate scale down to two decimal places and focus needs to be spot on. Paul is right if it did the all sky modelling it would be perfect.
