PixInsight - MURE De Noise Script
« on: 09:09:26, 04 November, 2015 »
This new script available from the PI forum http://pixinsight.com/forum/index.php?topic=9206.0 is well worth a look. Its a Noise Reduction script purely for single channel linear images so particularly suitable for NB. I have tried it on a few of my Ha images and found the results to be very good indeed, with none of the blotchy background that can result from other methods. It does rely on getting some sensor characteristics (Gain and Noise) but after that its a one click application.

Below a before and after.

Having played with it for a while now and on a lot of different images it needs to be the first operation in the post stacking workflow, even before something like DBE. Its not too great on really noisy images but if you have a few hours worth in the tank it seems to work really well.

Do you reckon it will allow you to stretch the final image a little further than normal?

WOW,  it bloody works n all, with out knowing what the gaussian noise should be set to,  I just used what he had on his pics on the forum.

Any one know ( Chris  :D) how this is set up in English   not as per     "The standard deviation of detector additive white Gaussian noise parameter is set to an estimate of the quadrature sum of read noise and dark current noise in a 40 minute dark provided by the DarkBiasNoiseEstimator script"   That's just gobble de gook to me, lol

In proper English :)

You need to get the sensor gain from the SX website (I think yours is 0.3). Grab a couple of Bias frames and put them in the DarkBiasNoiseEstimator. That will give you the value to put in the Gaussian Noise box. If you have calibrated the frames (which you will of in a stack) then the Offset is zero.

Chris

Mark

It does lead to some incredibly low background values using a workflow of Crop>MUREDenoise>DBE>Masked Stretch(1000 Iterations, Target Background 0.1) so should enable a bigger stretch without bring up the residual noise.

Chris

ps It does not like mixed stacks e.g. some 900 second subs mixed in with 1200 ones

I had the Gain value and it is 0.3,  Cheers , that's much easier to understand on what to do, lol

If you want to be a bit OCD it is worth getting 2 Bias, 2 Flats and 2 Darks (of differing lengths) and putting them into the BasicCCDParameters script. That will give you the actual gan of your camera rather than relying on the one published by SX. Gain can differ quite significantly from camera to camera. My 814 seems to have a gain of 0.28 cf a published gain of 0.25 and plugging 0.28 into the MUREDeNoise script does bring a tangible improvement.

I must have thrown about 30 images at it now and in all cases it is better than any other de-noise method I have found and with none of the faffing about associated with them. Integrate, crop and De-Noise. Simples.

I'm doing something wrong as it's just adding more noise to my image :/

Phil

After applying it, re-doing the screen stretch can "suggest" the image is noisier but that is a function of the stretch. Do a before and after NoiseEvaluation and you will see its just not the case. that being said I have not yet tried it on any of my 8300 chip images so will take a look.

I noticed that after running it then doing a screen stretch,  it looked awful.      But it does work.
