15. Star Mask

It is often useful to do a round of star reduction to reduce the visual impact of the stars on the object being imaged, particularly in sky areas with dense star fields. Key to star reduction is a good star mask. The settings for this tool take a degree of trial and error but the end goal is to have a mask that when applied and inverted, covers all but the smallest stars. I find it useful in star reduction to reduce the smoothness value from the default and increase the scale and noise threshold to grab the larger stars and avoid background noise respectively.

Don't forget to invert the mask back before applying star reduction.

16. Morphological Transformation

This is a tool I have spent several hours playing with. I used to use erosion for star reduction but found it to produce stars with a very hard edge profile. Selection does a better job but has two sliders to adjust. I also find it works best with a multi-way circular structuring element. The default is one way but by clicking on the +[Add Way] it is possible to draw in the box to produce a much more believable stellar profile.

The end result is a very subtle star reduction.

17. Dark Structure Enhance

[Script>Utilities>DarkStructureEnhance]. This one is very optional and I don't use it on all images but used sparingly, it can add further to an images shadow contrast and with an object like this it can be very useful.

Multiple iterations with a small amount give better results than a single large dose.

18. Unsharp Mask

Again, very easy to overdo it. Apply with a L mask and turn down the settings. Undo>Redo to make sure it is not overcooked and be prepared to turn down further.

19. Integer ReSample

For posting to UKAI it is necessary to downsample an image. Doing it by an integer amount tends to give better results than downsampling to a fixed scale

20. Halo Reduction

On bright stars I get a reflection back of the Tak rear element. Its nigh on impossible to get rid of them completely but this does reduce their impact a little.

Use PixelMath to create an ellipse centred on the halo and with the dimensions set to cover it completely and create a new image

Convolve the result significantly and apply as a mask

Using curves, reduce the brightness of the halo. You cant overdo it or it becomes obvious.

nicely written Chris,  now booked marked.

I've been wondering why MureDenoise says it's only for NB images,  I've passed this thought a few Luminance channels with what I can see fairly decent results.    It's probably got some maths to it why recommended for N/B images but if it works, it works.

Rog

I don't think it is just for NB images but does only work on mono frames so for LRGB you would have to apply it to each. I've tried it on RGB and it seems to work well but its especially nice on those weak signal OIII frames that seem to add oodles of noise when combined with Ha.

Yeah that's what I thought,  also it makes no difference to a non linear image,  I tried that as well,

Looks like my N/R woes have been answered.

Very good workflow, Chris... absol. excellent

I do maybe 70% of that to get an decent NB image.... the extra is really the "icing on the cake"... very impressive in my books. VERY!
