Best lens for canon 600D
« on: 22:17:35, 20 January, 2016 »
Hello everyone!

Just wondering if anyone knows what's the best lens for a canon 600D? For starscapes and for close up stuff.

Cheers :)

Andre,

It depends what you mean by starscapes and close up stuff. There's no lens that will do it all. For wide angle 'starscapes' you would need something like the Samyang 14mm F/2.8 but for close up stuff then the longer the focal length the better. "Best" is also subjective. Best would be something like the Canon EF 1200mm f/5.6 L USM Lens. However, that would set you back about $120,000.00.

Do you have a tracking mount or will it just be on a tripod?

Then you'll want a wide angle lens as you'll not be able to image anything with a longer focal length due to star trailing :)

What Phillyo said you can image about 1 sec max before star trailing starts to occur.
So a tracking mount is needed - popular lightweight (and not too expensive) choises now are iOptron Skytracker and Skywatcher Sky Adventurer.
Of lenses, Samyang has good priced manual lenses from wide (10mm) to tele 135mm.
And I recommend prime lenses.

You can calculate the maximum exposure time for each lens will the following equation 400 / lens focal length = max exposure time before star trailing in seconds

So for a 10mm lens that Tapio suggest, 400/10 = 40 seconds.
For a 200mm lens it would be 400/200 = 2 seconds. Even with a massive ISO like 12800, 2 seconds wouldn't be enough to image anything other than possibly the moon! (a lot less than 2 seconds by the way).

So you have a couple of options. You can purchase something like the Samyang 10mm or the 14mm which I love and take some nice long exposure wide angle photo's of the milky way? You could potentially use something like the Canon 50mm 1.8 lens and capture a few hundred exposures of the Orion nebula and stack them together. 400 / 50 = 8 seconds so you might get something from that?

The other option is a tracking mount, the iOptron Skytracker, Skywatcher Sky Adventurer, Astrotrac etc or something bigger like a HEQ5 or NEQ6 depending on your budget.

I never want to put people off taking pictures of the stars, but at the same time you need to try and be realistic about what you're going to achieve with the available equipment :)

Last point. There's no bit of kit better than a truely dark sky :)

Good luck and if you have any other questions please feel free to ask.

Andre - if your only going to put a DSLR with a 200mm lens on it then I can recommend the Skywatcher Star Adventurer... it would probably struggle with a 150Mak on it though in which case your looking at a HEQ5 to do it justice and future proof yourself.
