iOptron iEQ45 pro and SW HEQ5 pro tracking comparison
« on: 00:35:19, 23 March, 2016 »
Hi all, recently upgraded mounts from the trusty HEQ5 to an iEQ45 pro.
Here is a video of Jupiter taken with each mount in succession with no guiding. Its time lapse with one frame every 15 seconds for 50 minutes each mount. The first 6 seconds is the HEQ5 and the second 6 the iEQ45.
Try and ignore the upward drift in the first half due to the HEQ5 not being particularly well polar aligned.

HEQ5 PE seems quite bad (over 1' ?).
Back when I had this mount I got about 20" without PEC and about 15" with PEC on.

I have never known it to be any better than this and I have wasted lots of time investigating why I couldn't get tracking more typical of these mounts as reported by many others online. Maybe I have a bad one. I bought this one secondhand as a plain HEQ5 that I then bought the goto upgrade for. I estimate it to be 8-10 years old, does that put it in the era when SW had an iffy reputation for quality control? Did SW perhaps grade the gears and worms so the good ones went into the goto versions?

I understand results better if it's the original HEQ5 version.
Pro/Synscan is much better.
