ORION NEBULA Imaging Challenge - WINNERS ANNOUNCEMENT
« on: 16:51:06, 23 April, 2016 »

Challenge No 3 - Orion Nebula

Round 3 of our Imaging Challenge is now complete, and with 22 images entered, it was no mean feat for the judges to come up with a shortlist, and opinions were mixed and varied greatly, but we have managed to finally pull together our top 6 of the favoured entries.

I would like to offer my congratulations to the top three prize winners, and to the commended image selections, and equally to thank all who entered the competition, and if you didn't quite make the list this time around, look out for our final round of the Imaging Challenge coming very soon, for one last chance to win an Altair GP Cam

Winning Image

Congratulations to Matt Jenko WINNER of the Orion Nebula Imaging Challenge!

The judges felt that this image from Matt was outstanding for a DSLR setup, there is great depth to the darker regions around the nebula, and the bright core has been carefully controlled from shorter exposures and skillful image processing. The image has a pleasing natural beauty, showing the orion nebula in all its classic wonderful glory.  Overall our favourite image. Well done Matt!

Matt wins an Altair GP-CAM courtesy of our sponsor, Altair Astro*

2nd Place Image

The judges liked this mono inverted image from Gremlin because it is different, and reminiscent of a fine pencil sketch and yet showing all of the key structure of the nebula. It was a close runner to the first placed image .... very nicely done

Gremlin wins a UKAI* Prize!   8)

3rd Place Image

Smooth and detailed is a hard trick to pull off. Shows fine gradients and subtle core details very well and with well balanced processing. Though the colour palette is a little off the norm, the judges didn't feel this detracted from a fine image, well done Mark!

Mark also wins a UKAI* prize!   8)

Commended places

As well as our winners above, the following were selected as commended images in our top 6

We would like to thank our sponsor, Altair Astro for providing the GPCam for the competition prize, and again a big 'thankyou' to everyone who entered their images, as they were all of a very high standard -
well done folks!   :urock:

In case you missed any of the entries, they can all be seen here

We will soon be starting the 4th and final round of the Altair Astro/UKAI Imaging Challenge, with the theme 'Summer Clusters' to run throughout the summertime

*Can ALL winners please contact me via 'Private Message' within 14 days to discuss prize options and postal address details so that I can arrange delivery - Thankyou.  Ade (swashy)
