Inside Pixinsight - Warren A Keller
« on: 09:12:15, 06 October, 2016 »
Not wanting to prompt discussion about whether PI should require a book written about it or another PI vs Photoshop spat, this new book was lying on my desk when I returned from Kelling so thought it worth a mention.

Warren Keller is best known for the IP4AP video series so has some reasonable credentials.

The book is split into main sections covering

1) Preprocessing - Selection & Grading,  Calibration
2) Linear Post Processing - Background modelling, Deconvolution, Noise Reduction
3) Non Linear Post Processing - Stretching, LRGB combination, HDR, Contrast and Sharpness, Saturation
4) Special Processing - Drizzling, Mosaics, Narrowband

There are also two start to finish walkthroughs, one for OSC and the other for LRGB.

The book is written in an easy going style and is quite readable, though a little 'American' in places, and covers the above topics in reasonable detail. Its perhaps not ideal for totally new PI users as it tends to assume some knowledge of the user interface. I also think it presents the writers way of doing things without exploring some of the other options, a little overly prescriptive. Some quite complex processes such as deconvolution are not really covered in the depth needed whilst other more simple elements are covered in great detail. That being said it does a reasonably good job of covering each processing step and would help an intermediate PI user who still reaches for PS when struggling to do something in PI. The OSC and LRGB walkthroughs are very well presented and would be a good basis for developing a workflow.

My main criticism is that the print quality is not the greatest. There are lot of PI screenshots in the book and some are quite hard to read.

For £20 it covers a lot of ground so has a guarded recommendation.

I bought it a couple of weeks ago, though I confess I haven't got very far through it. Just reading it through from cover to cover would be.. painful. However, as a reference to specific issues I hope it will be useful.

I also just ordered R. Scott Ireland's book Photoshop Astronomy, I still use Photoshop so just trying to cover all angles :-)

I had that when I used PS,   found it quite helpful.

I bought it last week and picked up a few new ideas for things that I wasn't doing before. It's a good read I've started re processing some of my old data sets.
