What type of pc to run Pixinsight?
« on: 14:47:27, 10 March, 2017 »
I'm looking to buy Pixinsight in the not too distant future. The only problem is that I need a new pc to run it. What spec are people using?

Its not too onerous for the most part but obviously the faster the processor and more memory it has the better, an SSD drive is also a good idea as there is a lot of disk writing going on. It does not rely on an expensive graphics card. I run it on an i7 iMac with 32Gb of Ram and an SSD drive and it flies.

I was looking at an Acer i7 with 16gb ram, HDD with 128ssd and graphics card. I'm probably going to need a new monitor too as I don't have HDMI on mine!

It's listed in PCWorld. Otherwise the local computer shop will build me something but it'll cost more but I need to tell him what to put in! Unfortunately my knowledge is very general!

What size monitor are you using?

I run it on an Asus i5 laptop - 8meg Ram and SSD - no problems at  all.
Scopes - 130 Heritage for visual, ES 210mm f3.8 Carbon Hex astrograph for imaging, SW EvoGuide and Lodestar for guiding
Mount - Skywatcher AZ-EQ6-GT
Camera - Atik 460EX mono and Atik EFW loaded with Baader Narrowband and Broadband filters

It'll 'run' on almost any old PC but of course the faster the computer the better. I use it on two i7 4790K-based computers, one in the house the other in the Obs. Both have 32GB RAM and twin SSDs. Don't underestimate the importance of having a good (callibrated) monitor - most of the decisions about the way your image finally looks will be based on what you see on the screen in front of you, so it pays to have one of decent quality and hi-resolution. I use Dell Pro series, a 24" in the house and a 27" 4K monitor in the Obs. I use a Spyder5 to callibrate the monitors.

I bought a second hand  dell precision 690.  No fancy processor but has 32gm ram already installed.  It's a dream for pix insight.

For the monitor look for ips screens

Thanks everyone. I think I'm going to go for an Acer desktop from their site.
I5, 8gb memory, can be upgraded to 32gb, 128gb SSD, graphics card that allows 3 monitors at once.

It will run my current monitor which does 1660x1080 for the time being. It'll give me a chance to get going in Pixinsight. I'm a bit limited in space to go too big on the monitor!

I'll be coming back for help with Pixinsight!
