RGB combine
« on: 10:15:59, 05 April, 2017 »
I'm trying out Pixinsight at present. Is there any advantage in stacking images in PI? At the moment I'm still using Maxim dl to calibrate and stack the individual channels before transferring to PI to continue.

PI has a few more options when it comes to rejection and normalisation but all in all they should give a very similar result. The big advantage in staying in PI is that the .fit standard is very loose and there can be minor differences between software as to how the standard is interpreted. Personally I prefer to use as few bits of software in the chain as possible.

Thanks for that. I've been concentrating on seeing if I can get to grips with processing RGB and luminance images first and then combining them using the videos from Harrysastroshed. They are very helpful. I take the point about fits files but there is a limit to how many new bits my brain can take in!

One other question: how do you manage your flats? At the moment I do a set whenever there's a change in the imaging train and set then as calibration frames in Maxim. If I'm to do everything in PI should I be keeping them with the relevant image dataset? It doesn't help that, as I'm on a trial I've got PI on my new desktop and Maxim on my imaging laptop!

I am planning on moving my trial to the imaging laptop for Kelling to see how it runs there and to use whilst there.

I always keep the master flat, bias and dark in a 'Cal' folder with my lights. That way if I want to go back and recalibrate things later I have the matching calibration files. So my standard data layout is

1704_814_FLT_M45    i.e. Year and Month_Camera_Scope_Target
   Cal
   R
   G
   B

Calibration, Alignment and Stacking can be done in PI with the Batch Pre-Processing script though I prefer to do it longhand.

That's what I thought. I'm going to have to get more organised. I have got old flats in dated folders but I'd have a job figuring out which image they belonged to! I do generally keep the RGB and luminance files produced by Maxim. I don't do darks, they're not recommended for my SX H694, just bias frames.

Most of the time my images are Ok but I do have issues with focus as I haven't got autofocus running yet. I've only just found the backlash settings in the Hitecastro Ascom driver! I need to pluck up courage to try autofocus again. Before when I've tried it I've ended up worse than when I started!
