Hello from Warrington Cheshire
« on: 09:34:45, 23 April, 2017 »
Am a new member to this site,  I've been into astronomy for some time, the last few years, I've just found out what I like to image which is deep sky
a question  if am going to do 2 or 3 star alignment how far apart should the star be from each other, at the moment all am doing is 1 star alignment, which is best ?

Hi Malcolm and welcome to UKAI.

3 star alignment will get you more accurate GoTo's as there is more data to interpolate between. Spacing them around the sky helps a little as does having one of the points on the other side of the Meridian.

Welcome to UKAI Malcolm.

You can convert them in a mage processing package like Photoshop (which costs) or Gimp (which is free but has limitations) or PixInsight (which have an Everest like learning curve)... the other way is to save them out as a .fit and use Fits Liberator [copy and past into google] to convert it.

The most likely problem with the Atik is the power... I have the 16ic and it was generally power related whenever I had grainy subs ! Check cables, connections etc.  Might also be worth trying a different USB cable as that can also cause problems !

Thanks  s  i didn't think about the USB cable or the power, my USB cable is about 5m long , so i can use my laptop in the garage & have the telescope outside
the power am using is AC output 12v 0.75A.

Nothing special to recommend Malcolm... sometimes there's no reason one cable works over another... just try a couple of different ones and see if you find one that solves the issue ?

...and if you have a multimeter, make sure there is a good 12volts at the connector into the cable. A lot of cameras struggle if the voltage drops below 12 volts (and some like it a little hotter still, I run most of mine at 13.5!)

lol... same here... we feel your pain  :hurt:

You could still test it by just putting the end cap on the front of the scope and taking a long exposure (3mins plus).... you should get a dark image (with some hot pixels) but you will soon know if it's working.  In effect you're taking a dark-frame  ;)
