Great Stuff, Ade.  Looking forward to 2024?  If you can get this in 2 mins 20 secs, imagine what you can do with 4 1/2 minutes!

Cheers,

Peter

As a matter of interest, a bit of research shows the small town of Ennis, 61 miles by road, 48 miles straight line from Dallas airport is bang on the centreline of the 2024 Eclipse.  And there are a number of hotels there!  But with Dallas that close, we'd have to book early!

Here is a Google Earth file.  Playing with Skymap I'm pretty sure that I've got the pushpin right on the centreline.  www.madpc.co.uk/~peterv/astroplover/2024.kmz  Just download the (very small) file - it may open directly in Google Earth, or save it and load it.

Cheers,

Peter

Thanks Peter, I could not open the file but we are planning on being somewhere nearby Dallas for 2024, hopefully we can get a good bunch of members together in USA for the eclipse  8)

A bit more messing about with Skymap and Google Earth shows the town of Fredericksburg (Texas) is on the centreline, will get 4 minutes 29.5 seconds, and is around 65 miles North of San Antonio which has an International Airport  ;)  Probably not as crowded as locations near Dallas.  A larger town than Ennis - plenty of hotels, and 1100 ft. higher at 1600 ft. above sea level.

Austin International Airport also in the vicinity, and other smaller towns to choose from - the centreline passes through or near several.  For example Kerrville, similar distance from San Antonio gets 4 mins 29.9 secs.

Don't really know why I'm doing this - I'll be 80 then!  But interesting and something to aim for!

Cheers,

Peter.
