DSS won't register all my images?
« on: 14:22:12, 04 September, 2017 »
Recently DSS has not completed registering my Raw images and I can't work out why.  The images are on the light side but lots of stars and all round.  Have tried with flats and bias which are registered ok and without calibration files - registration stops at the same point in each case -  after 13x480 secs exposures.  I tried using just 10 frames which it did register and successfully stacked!

Might be a memory issue Annie - has it worked historically ?  If it has, have you changed anything recently ?

Are all the subs selected ?  I'm assuming as you're saying RAW that they are DSLR images ?

What does it do when it "stops" ?

Have used DSS for a couple of years now and this is the first time it has failed to register all my subs.  I don't recall changing anything . Yes all the subs are checked and yes a Canon 550D and recently a Canon 5D Mk 11. Both modified. Have only recently started using the 5D and haven't checked to see whether the refusal to register is linked with that particular camera.  Have also just started using Backyard EOS but can't see how that would affect DSS. The first time it happened I had only loaded 10 subs and DSS stopped the registration process after 6  and did nothing.  I started the registration process immediately and it then proceeded to register the remaining four. The second time I loaded 20x480 sec subs with flats and bias frames and it stopped after 13 and could not be persuaded to finish the rest.  I started the process again and then tried without flats and bias but  still got no further than 13.  Eventually I loaded just 10 of the subs without any calibration files and DSS registered and stacked them!!  I will have another look at my settings just to make sure just to make sure the error's not staring me in the face.

Thanks
Annie

Jim - I have a C drive which is SSD but save that for Lunar/planetary imaging and a D drive which I use for most other stuff and at the moment it  shows only 61GB used out of 931GB.  DSS is downloaded onto my D drive and my picture files are also on my D drive.

Annie - have you recently done any windows updates ?

Also, have you started having problems since starting to use Backyard for capture ?  Might be something to do with how BY-EOS is saving out the RAW files ?  Have you tried it on some old subs not collected by BY-EOS ?

Hi Annie, given you have nearly 1TB of memory, I will make the assumption that it is a fairly new computer with a high specification? Please let us know if my assumption is wrong? I had suspected you may have run up a processing/memory impasse that was holding you up.

Sorry to say I don't use DSS so can't offer any other advice. Regards Jim

Yes Jim - it's a newish Acer Predator so no problem with memory.  Am going to just have to go through my settings very carefully and probably try re-stacking some files I've had no problems with stacking in the past.  If all fails try Regim!

All the best

I think system memory here is more relevant than hard drive/ssd.
Especially if trying to stack 5D images which are bigger in size.
Maybe it's time to move forward from DSS.

I think you might be right about system memory and also time to move on from DSS.  Would Regim be any better - what would you suggest?

Annie, your u are almost spoilt for choice with a wide range of programs available, I suspect the deciding factor will be your budget. Personally I use Maxim DL 6.14 and find it comprehensive and most importantly reliable. It just works. Others will will favour other programs and those who use them will offer their own advice. Early on I tried Astroart which worked well for me then and even Nebulosity both programs have been updated so may work even better these days. HTH Jim

Haven't tried Regim for stacking but guess it works fine. Looks like latest version is from 2015.
Have used Astroart for stacking and 4 version is not so fast with raw files, I hear 5 version should be better.
Then there's Nebulosity and latest Astro Pixel Processor (read good things about this).
Just try which suits you best.

Thanks guys

Looked at Astro Pixel processor which looks promising - at the moment it's 150 euros to initially buy but then 50 euros each year to renew!

Actually it's now (there was some debate on pricing first so it changed) 50 euros yearly licence or 125 euros Owner's license.
