My Current Rig
« on: 11:51:47, 11 November, 2017 »
Following a number of changes to my original rig and pending the sale of an Atik 7 x 2" filter wheel being available (next planned change) this is a shot of my current rig.  It is set up to allow me to take Luminance and Narrowband images via a 5 x 2" EFW2 (Baader Filters Lum/Ha/OIII and SII).

Mounted on an EQ8Pro, the Takahashi FSQ106 EDX IV is connected to an Atik 16200 and uses a Lodestar via an Atik OAG EFW2.  I use a Robofocus to automate the focusing.  I have recently added a HiTechAstro Mount Hub Pro, which has greatly simplified the wiring and was a doddle to set-up. However, I decided in addition the MHP USB cable to keep the 16200 and EQMoD cables separate, there is also dedicated power to the Mount at 13.8v and 12v via the MHP for everything else.

Luckily I had 2 heavy duty Losmandy saddles spare, which when bolted together make a tidy counter-balance to off-set the weight of the camera/EFW etc.  I was also able to find a heavy duty 300mm vixen dovetail to which I have added Velcro to attach the MHP (supported by a couple of cable ties).  This approach makes it easier to fine tune the balance of the scope.  Only one mount counter balance weight is needed.  I think I have the mount running well now with indicated guide RMS errors in Maxim DL being in the mid-hundredths of a pixel based on 6-second exposures throughout 20 minute individual exposures via the 16200.

The ST4 cable for the Lodestar and cable to the Robofocus Motor are waaaaay too long but folded and cable tied to the scope they are not causing any issues, other than together they make things look less tidy.

Thanks for looking, ATB Jim

Nice setup Jim but all those cables would give me nightmares :-)

Thanks Chris, I think it is looks worse than it is in reality. Having explored a full range of movement around the mount and pier nothing drags or snags and the area between the scope and mount in completely clear.  The routing of the cables has enough slack to allow freedom of movement and anchored to one of the mount lifting handles it keeps the cables in one place and out of the way.

The next time I disassemble the scope etc I will have a go at trying to tidy things up some more for cosmetic purposes.

Jim

Those that know me would attest to me being very slightly OCD about cables

This is my current setup. All USB and Power cabling through the mount using the worlds most fiddly to make Kyconn connectors for power.  I do find those topside USB cables annoying and am investigating making my own up to be able to do custom lengths!

Lol I recall some previous comments regarding your OCDness, but I do understand where you are coming from. Looks like you have a nice obs and some super gear. Given the lightweight nature of your lens/camera I am a little surprised you did not opt to piggy back on one of your scopes, thus giving you more flexibility to image at different scales of target?

What like this you mean?

Multiple rigs does get a bit complex with SkyX/Paramount especially if you want to employ TPoint as you need to build and maintain a model for each telescope. I tend to make a list of targets for a decent period of time and stick to one rig, probably for the season. I then build a good TPoint model (500+ same points which takes 3 or 4 hours) which gives me great pointing (around 10"RMS) and the ability to go unguided (though at longer focal lengths I do guide though it does very little). The little 135 happily runs unguided and I have a script to control the imaging run and do dithering. It even auto flips so I can fire it up and leave it for hours at a time.

Slightly????  I do not think that is the best adjective to describe the level of "OCD-ness" you possess!

Lovely kit. I think my question would have envisioned the lens being piggy backed on say the 110 scope. Obviously you can t-point the 110 to your hearts content the the fov with the lens would be very forgiving especially with a set of adjustable rings on top of a a Losmandy plate.

Nice set up Jim, ignore the OCD people, I don't give a stuff about tidying up my cables, mine are far worse then yours, mainly because I am constantly changing my rig around.  So long as nothing snags I let it all hang out.
