M42 Orion - 57 megapixel gigaphoto
« on: 16:43:02, 06 February, 2018 »
Hi all

a few weeks ago I decided that was time to take my FINAL m42 pic, and that it was going to be special.

Three nights of mixed exposures (from 30 seconds up to 8 minutes) and a long and complex work of combination in PixInsight, here's my 57 MEGAPIXEL Orion Nebula, result of about 4 hours of total exposures.

I never like hdr and overprocessed images, even more of this delicate and complex object, so it was not easy to keep every single faint nebulosity inside and around, and yet save the core and keep it's luminosity compared to the rest...but I'm very pleased with results. My best astrophoto so far (and the biggest for sure!).

Below I attach a small preview, but is possible to see and zoom into the FULL RESOLUTION 1:1 at this link https://easyzoom.com/imageaccess/37ab0616e3fb4150b45cde58e7ebc531

Very nice indeed. A touch blue in the background. I do think this object is one where HDR is worthwhile as the dynamic range is far beyond what 16 bits can cope with. Merging exposures with care, takes you way beyond 16 bits.

Hey Chris thanks!

Yes I tried different colour balances and in the end I wanted the sky for this one to be a bit 'blue' and so a bit coloured, to give some vivid aspect to the whole picture.

For the HDR I meant the 'processed' HDR, the one where it looks all overprocessed. I simply integrated different exposures of different zones as needed (basically is the simplest PI integration without any further HDR 'enhancement').

Those enhancements are the ones I don't like, I prefer a more natural look :-)

A good HDR of M42 is really hard to make and often looks overprocessed.
I think you did well here.
