Help with H-a processing
« on: 18:15:28, 09 March, 2018 »
Help needed please
I image using a DSLR, stack in DSS and process in pixinsight
I have just bought a H-a filter
I will be taking a group of RGB and H-a , my question is how to combine them
Shall I just load them all in DSS and let it stack them all together? Or do I need to stack them separately?
I don't use PS buy the way and I don't like stacking in Pixinsight
Any help would be grately appreciated

There are as many ways to mix Ha with RGB as there are full moon clear skies in a year.

Personally I would stack in PI (I understand you don't like it but read on) with split CFA channels (so you get a red, blue and green stack) and again with Ha. That way you can do the trick of blending the Ha with the individual channels. You can stack RGB in DSS and then split the channels later but its better to split them prior to stacking. Chucking it all in DSS will (I assume) just use the Ha as a luminance channel and to get the best out of that hard won data, you do need to be a little more creative.

Once you have HA, R, G  and B channels there are loads of tutorials on the PI website.

One further question though. If I don't stack the RGB and H-a together first (in PI or in DSS) how can I combine them later when they are not perfectly  aligned? (Bearing in mind that I take the Ha and RGB on different nights so camera orientation and framing may not be identical?

In PI you would use the same frame as a reference for both stacks so they would all be aligned OR stack them separately and then run the stacks through star alignment to nudge them into place. I tend to do the former as its a much easier operation.
